What Is the TOEFL Exam?

The TOEFL examination checks how well someone who does not have English as their first language, speaks, read, listen, and write in English at a university level. Reading and Listening are now adaptive. Your performance in the first module determines whether you get a harder or easier second module, which personalises the test to your level and can shorten overall test time.
There is no independent essay task anymore. Writing will include tasks like email writing, or answering a question from your teacher on a discussion post.
There are no scheduled breaks, so make sure you have energy and water before you start.
The TOEFL exam order is: Reading, then Listening, then Writing, Speaking.
The whole test takes 2 hours including the time it takes to read the directions but it can be a little shorter or longer because some parts are adaptive.

TOEFL Exam Eligibility

There is no age limit (minimum or maximum) to register for the exam. The test is designed for people aged 16 and above. Anyone can sign up.

You can take the TOEFL exam as many times as you want but you have to wait at least 3 days before you take the TOEFL exam again.

How to Register for the TOEFL Exam

To register for the test you need to go to the ETS website. This process usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes if you have all your documents ready:

Nothing else on you:You cannot have devices, smartwatches, notes or personal electronics in the testing room. If you are at a test centre you need to store these things with your belongings. If you are taking the Home Edition you need to store your devices after you check in.

Here are some things to remember for the day of the test:

The test does not have any scheduled breaks so you need to plan for this.
Scratch paper and pencils are provided at test centres. If you are taking the Home Edition you can use a whiteboard or a blank piece of paper in a clear plastic cover with a marker that you can erase.
Writing assistance software is not permitted during the test.
For Home Edition, you'll need a private room, a desktop or laptop (tablets aren't supported), and a movable webcam so the proctor can view the room.

Some education consultancies that work with ETS India say that the total cost, including taxes is usually around ₹18,000 for registration, ₹3,900 for late registration and ₹5,900 for rescheduling. It does not matter if you take the test at a centre or at home with the Home Edition, the ETS India registration fee is the same. Because ETS occasionally revises fees, it's worth double-checking the exact current amount on the official ETS website before you pay.

TOEFL Exam or IELTS: Which Should You Choose?
