TOEFL Exam Highlights: Everything You Need to Know About the 2026 TOEFL iBT

  • The TOEFL iBT is conducted by ETS.
  • The test was redesigned from 21 January 2026. Now the test is shorter and changes, with each question.

If you are thinking about studying abroad and you keep hearing that the TOEFL has changed, you are right. ETS made some changes to the test in January 2026. If you have been using old study materials, some of what you learned from those materials is not true anymore. This guide will tell you about the TOEFL iBT test, how it is scored, how much it costs and what is different now so you can prepare for the TOEFL with confidence.

What Is the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT test is used to see how well you can read, listen, write, and speak in English. This test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service, which is also known as ETS. There are two tests that universities use to check how good your English is: The TOEFL iBT and IELTS.

You can not take the old TOEFL Paper-Based Test anymore as they stopped this test in January 2024. Now you can take the TOEFL iBT test in two ways: in a test centre or at home with the TOEFL home edition.

TOEFL iBT 2026 Exam Pattern: Sections, Tasks and Timing

The table below shows the ETS test structure that started on 21 January 2026:

The Reading and Listening parts of the test are adaptive so, the total time it takes can be different for each person taking the test. ETS says you should plan to spend two hours on the whole exam including the check in and getting instructions. The actual test time is shorter than that. There are no breaks during the test so you should be ready to go when you sit down.

What Changed in the New TOEFL Exam Pattern

There are a few changes to the TOEFL exam pattern which are as follows:

  • Reading and Listening are now adaptive.This means that your performance in the previous module will determine if your next part is easy or hard. This way the test can figure out your level quickly.
  • New task types."Complete the Words" asks you to fill in missing letters within an academic passage, similar in spirit to how some placement tests work. "Build a Sentence" and "Listen and Repeat" are new additions to Writing and Speaking respectively, while integrated tasks and the traditional academic essay have been removed entirely.
  • More everyday content.Along with the academic lectures and passages, the test now includes emails, text messages, campus announcements and casual conversations which match what students actually talk on campus.
  • Shorter overall duration.The test now takes around 67 to 100 minutes which is shorter compared to the older test which took around 116 minutes.

If you are using preparation books, be careful. Anything published before 2025 might not be accurate. Check ETSs document for the correct information.

TOEFL iBT Test Center vs Home Edition

The TOEFL iBT home edition is the same as the test center version. It has the same content, adaptive routing and scoring as the test centre version. Universities treat both versions the same in applications.

  • Test centre:You take the test at a Prometric or ETS test center. Staff supervise you in person.
  • Home Edition:You take the test on your computer. A live proctor watches you remotely. You need an internet connection, a working webcam, microphone and a quiet room.

Both versions have the same registration fee. Choose the one that's more convenient and comfortable for you rather than cost or perceived difficulty.

TOEFL Scoring in 2026: The New 1–6 Band Scale

The new scoring system has a 1 to 6 band scale alongside the 0-120 point scale ETS now reports:

  • A section score for all sections. On a 1.0 to 6.0 scale, in 0.5-point increments.
  • Your overall score is the average of the four section scores rounded to the half band.
  • Between the 2026-2028 transition period, you will also get a score on the old 0-120 scale so universities that haven't yet updated their internal benchmarks can still interpret your result.
  • Reading and Listening are scored by computer which depends on the adaptive routing and responses.
  • Speaking and Writing use a combination of ETS's automated scoring engine and human rater oversight, judged against defined rubrics for delivery, language use, coherence, and task achievement.

There is no pass or fail score. Each university and program sets its own minimum score. Always check the score your target course expects.

TOEFL Exam Fee 2026

The TOEFL exam fee is different for each country and is subject to change. The numbers given below shall be treated as approximate figures. You should always check the ETS fees page to find out the exact amount you have to pay for your test location before you sign up.

  • The fees are usually between US$170 and US$255 depending on the country where you take the TOEFL exam.
  • In India the fee is reported around ₹16,900 to ₹18,000 including taxes. This can change because of changes in the currency and taxes.
  • When you pay the registration fee you can send your TOEFL score report to up to four institutions. If you want to send it to more institutions you have to pay around US$29 for each extra report.
  • There are common charges that you might want to pay, like a late registration fee, which is around US$49 or a fee to change your test date, which is around US$69. There is also an option to get your results faster which costs around US$129.

The TOEFL exam fee is not the same because ETS changes the prices for each country from time to time. So it is a good idea to check the current TOEFL exam fee when you are signing up.

TOEFL Exam Dates 2026 and Registration

TOEFL is different from some tests that only happen a few times in a year as it is available all year round. You can take the TOEFL iBT test at test centres that have sessions every month and it is also available as a Home Edition so, you can take it at home if that is more convenient for you depending on where you live.

There is no list of TOEFL exam dates for 2026 yet but you can see the dates when you log into your ETS account and choose a test centre or a Home Edition slot for the TOEFL iBT test.

It is recommended that you register at least three to four weeks before your preferred test date. This is because popular test centres and time slots fill up quickly during busy times.

India ID note: If you're taking the test in India you will need an original passport as identification when you register and on the test day. Other documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards and voter IDs are not accepted. Make sure your name matches between your ETS account and your passport or you might not be able to take the test and won't get a refund.

A few things you should know before you start getting ready for the TOEFL exam:

  • The TOEFL iBT is not harder or easier than the IELTS: it depends on whether you're more comfortable with a fully computer-based TOEFL format or a mix of written and face-to-face components for the TOEFL exam.
  • You can retake the TOEFL test as many times as you like with a minimum gap of 3 days between attempts for the TOEFL exam though the full fee applies each time for the TOEFL exam.
  • The MyBest Score feature lets many universities consider your best section scores across your last two years of attempts, rather than requiring everything from a single sitting for the TOEFL exam.
  • Scores for the TOEFL exam remain valid for two years from your test date after which they are no longer available to send to institutions for the TOEFL exam.

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Studying from pre-2026 materials without checking whether the task and scoring types for the TOEFL exam have changed.
  • Assuming Home Edition is easier than the test centre: the content and grading are identical for both formats.
  • Registering too close to the test date, which limits centre choice and can trigger late fees for the TOEFL exam.
  • Not confirming the required score for a specific university or programme before booking the test.
  • Skipping a section entirely, which means ETS will not score any part of your test, even the sections you completed.

TOEFL Score Requirements at Leading UAE Universities

Published TOEFL requirements vary by institution and programme. Based on each university's admissions pages, here's where several well-known UAE universities currently stand regarding the TOEFL exam:

The requirements for universities are subject to change as they update their websites. Some of the universities mentioned above are still yet to switch to the new 1–6 scale.
