How IELTS Test Dates Work in India

Unlike entrance exams such as JEE, NEET, or CAT, IELTS does not follow a single nationwide examination calendar. Instead, test dates are offered throughout the year across authorized IELTS test centres.

For IELTS on Paper, tests are held on 48 scheduled dates annually, typically on Thursdays and Saturdays. IELTS Academic is available on all 48 dates. IELTS General Training is offered on 24 of those dates, usually two per month.

For IELTS on Computer, tests are available up to seven days a week at many centres, with up to three sessions per day. This makes it far more flexible for candidates who need a specific date or quick results.

In India, test date availability varies by:

  • Test format (Computer or Paper)
  • Test type (Academic, General Training, UKVI, or Life Skills)
  • Test city and specific centre
  • Seat capacity at each centre

IELTS Speaking Test Dates

The Speaking test is scheduled by the test centre. It is always a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner. The timing depends on centre arrangements:

ScenarioTiming
Same-Day SpeakingOn the same day as Listening, Reading and Writing
Early SpeakingUp to 7 days before the main test date
Later SpeakingUp to 2 days after the main test date

You will be notified of your Speaking test date by your test centre after booking.

How to Choose the Right IELTS Test Date

Your IELTS score must be available before the institution's application deadline. IELTS results for paper-based tests are available within 13 days. Computer-delivered results are available within 3 to 5 days. Plan your test date accordingly to ensure your score reaches universities on time. For guidance on what band scores universities require, see our IELTS Band Score Guide.

Many countries require IELTS scores as part of student, work, or immigration visa applications. Australia, Canada, UK and New Zealand all accept IELTS. Book early enough to receive results before your visa document submission window. For country-specific score requirements, see our country-wise IELTS requirements guide.

Avoid booking the earliest available date if you are not ready. Evaluate your current level and choose a date that gives you enough time to prepare across all four sections. For structured preparation tips, see our IELTS Preparation Guide.

There is no limit on the number of times you can take IELTS. If you may need a retake, leave a buffer of at least 6 to 8 weeks before your final deadline. This allows time for a second attempt if needed.

IELTS demand increases sharply during January to March (for mid-year intakes) and August to October (for fall intakes). During these periods, book as early as possible to secure your preferred date and centre.
