Top Universities in the UAE Accepting IELTS

For Indian students, the UAE offers something no other study-abroad destination quite does: geographic proximity, a large and established Indian community, no income tax on future earnings and, uniquely, the presence of Indian university campuses on UAE soil. Whether you are applying straight after Class 12 or looking to pursue a postgraduate degree, IELTS is the primary English proficiency requirement across universities here and knowing exactly what each institution requires can save you significant time in planning.

This guide covers every major UAE university that accepts IELTS, with verified score requirements, tuition fees, intake windows and the one practical question most Indian students have but rarely get a clear answer to: Do you really need IELTS to apply?

UAE Universities with Indian-Origin Campuses

These are branch campuses of Indian universities, operating in the UAE. They follow familiar academic frameworks, are taught entirely in English and attract the largest share of Indian applicants in the UAE's university system. If you are applying from India, these campuses are likely your first reference point.

BITS Pilani Dubai is the only international campus of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Established in 2000, it is one of the largest engineering-focused institutions in the UAE and holds a 5-star rating from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in partnership with QS - an assessment covering teaching, research, employability and internationalisation.

  • Location:Dubai International Academic City

For Indian students: IELTS is required only if you studied at a non-English medium school. Students from CBSE, ICSE, or other English-medium boards are typically assessed through their marksheets by the admissions committee and an internal English evaluation may be conducted in place of IELTS. This is not an automatic waiver - confirmation must be sought directly from the BITS Pilani Dubai admissions office before assuming exemption.

The engineering programs include a 7.5-month industrial internship embedded in the curriculum and the campus maintains placement partnerships with over 300 companies. Over 90% of the international student body at BITS Pilani Dubai consists of Indian students.

MAHE Dubai, established in 2000, is the first Indian multi-disciplinary university campus in the region. It is licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) and accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), holding a 5-star KHDA rating. Students who completed undergraduate education at an English-medium institution may apply for an IELTS exemption for PG programs, subject to documentation review by the Amity admissions team.

UAE Government and Federal Universities Accepting IELTS

These are federally or emirate-funded institutions - the most academically established universities in the country, with strong research outputs and government backing.

Important note for Indian applicants: Federal UAE universities - including Khalifa University, UAEU and Zayed University - require attested copies of Indian academic documents as part of the admission process. Document attestation (involving HRD / MEA attestation in India, followed by UAE embassy attestation) can take several weeks. Begin this process early, well before application deadlines.

Khalifa University is a federal research university focused on science, engineering and technology. It is the top-ranked university in the UAE for eight consecutive years and was placed #177 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026 (announced June 2025, per the official Khalifa University press release). It ranks #1 in the UAE and 3rd in the Arab region in the QS Arab Region Rankings 2026.

  • Location:Abu Dhabi

  • Minimum IELTS (PG):6.0 overall Academic IELTS - verified from the official Khalifa University postgraduate admissions page (ku.ac.ae/postgraduate-admissions). Applicants from English-medium institutions must provide evidence of IELTS 6.0 (or TOEFL iBT 79, or EmSAT 1400)

  • Annual Tuition (PG):Approximately AED 113,499 (~₹28.5 lakh at prevailing rates; verify current AED-INR rate)
  • Key Programs:Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, Petroleum Engineering

Because of its selective nature and strong research focus, a Band 7.0 overall in IELTS - rather than the minimum 6.0 - meaningfully strengthens a postgraduate application here. Full scholarships are available for all admitted international postgraduate students, per Khalifa University's official FAQ.

For Indian students seeking an internationally recognised qualification at lower cost than studying abroad, these offer a compelling alternative.

The University of Birmingham is a member of the Russell Group in the UK. Its Dubai campus delivers the full University of Birmingham curriculum and degrees are issued by the UK parent institution - not a separate UAE entity.

Can Indian Students Skip IELTS for UAE Universities?

This is the most common practical question Indian students have and the answer genuinely depends on the institution.

Several universities - specifically the Indian-origin campuses of BITS Pilani Dubai, MAHE Dubai and Amity University Dubai - may waive the IELTS requirement if you meet the following conditions:

  • You completed Class 10 and 12 at a CBSE, ICSE, or recognised English-medium school
  • You scored 60% or above in English in your qualifying examination

This waiver is not automatic. You must submit your marksheets and each university's admissions committee will assess your eligibility independently. Some institutions conduct an internal English assessment in place of IELTS for students who qualify.

UK and Australian branch campuses - including University of Birmingham Dubai, Middlesex University Dubai and UOWD - require IELTS from all non-native English speakers as a standard condition of their home country accreditation. This requirement cannot be waived at these institutions for Indian students, regardless of the medium.

Federal UAE universities (Khalifa, UAEU, Zayed) similarly maintain IELTS as a formal requirement alongside their document attestation process.

If there is any uncertainty, the safest course is to take IELTS and aim for 6.0 or above. This score keeps every institution on this list accessible.

UG vs PG: What Score Do You Actually Need?

Most UAE universities set lower IELTS thresholds for undergraduate admissions (5.0–6.0) compared to postgraduate programs (6.0–6.5). This is consistent practice and reflects the higher academic communication demands at postgraduate level - research work, thesis writing, seminars and professional-level written output.

If your target is an MBA or a master's in a competitive discipline, aim for 6.5 overall. This score keeps your options open across every institution in this guide, including the UK and Australian branch campuses. A score of 6.0 is sufficient for the majority of PG programs at UAE government and Indian-origin universities.

Regardless of the overall band required, pay attention to individual section bands. Many universities assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking scores independently during admissions review. A weak Writing score - even with a satisfactory overall band - can create complications at several institutions listed here.

What Is a Good IELTS Score for UAE Universities?

The UAE has no single national IELTS cutoff. Each institution sets its own threshold. As a practical benchmark:

  • 5.5 overall- Minimum for several UAE universities at UG level (UAEU, Abu Dhabi University, Canadian University Dubai)
  • 6.0 overall- The most commonly required score, applicable across both UG and PG at most institutions in this guide
  • 6.5 overall- Required by Australian and UK branch campuses for PG programs; advisable for competitive programs at selective institutions
  • 7.0 and above- Not generally required for UAE admission; relevant primarily for highly competitive research programs

No individual band score below 5.5 is recommended regardless of overall band requirements.

When Should You Book IELTS?

UAE universities run two main intakes: September (Fall) and January or February (Spring). A few institutions, including UOWD, also offer a Summer intake for select programs.

IELTS results are typically available within 13 days of the test date for computer-based tests. Book your IELTS exam at least 4–6 months before your target intake deadline to allow time for results, document preparation, and university attestation requirements.

If you narrowly miss a required band score in one section, IELTS now offers the One Skill Retake - an official option that allows you to retake a single skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) without repeating the full test. The retake must be booked within 60 days of your original test date and is available only for computer-based IELTS tests at participating centres. Before booking a One Skill Retake, confirm that your target UAE university accepts it, as institutional acceptance policies vary. Check the current list at the IELTS portal. This option is not currently available in the United States.
