GMAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2026
The GMAT runs for 2 hours 15 minutes and contains 64 questions across three sections. Each section lasts exactly 45 minutes and contributes an equal share of your total score. There is no essay, no geometry and no grammar-based question type on the current exam, which is where most preparation material sold in India is still wrong.
GMAT Exam Pattern 2026
Each section is timed independently, so a spare minute in Verbal Reasoning cannot be carried over into Quantitative Reasoning.

Which GMAT You Are Preparing For
Three names circulate online and only one describes the live exam.
The GMAT Focus Edition is the current test. GMAC began delivering it on 7 November 2023 and now refers to it simply as the GMAT. The GMAT (10th Edition), with its Analytical Writing Assessment, standalone Integrated Reasoning section and Sentence Correction questions, was replaced on 1 February 2024, after which the current edition became the only version available.
Scores from the two versions do not translate. The older exam ran on a 200 to 800 scale; the current one runs 205 to 805, and the distribution of scores across those scales differs. GMAC's position is direct: comparing total scores or section scores between editions is neither accurate nor meaningful. Percentile ranking is the only valid bridge, and GMAC publishes a concordance table for exactly that purpose.
Practical consequence: If you are buying second-hand books in Delhi or Mumbai and the contents page lists Sentence Correction, geometry or an essay task, the book describes an exam withdrawn on 1 February 2024 and will send you down at least three dead ends.
How the Exam Behaves on Screen
Section-level adaptive difficulty
Question difficulty adjusts to your answers as you move through each section. Your score reflects both the number of questions you answer correctly and the difficulty of those questions, so two candidates with identical raw counts can finish several points apart. GMAC does not release the scoring algorithm, and no external calculator reproduces it exactly.
Six section orders
You pick the order at the start of your appointment from all six permutations:
- Quantitative, Verbal, Data Insights
- Quantitative, Data Insights, Verbal
- Verbal, Quantitative, Data Insights
- Verbal, Data Insights, Quantitative
- Data Insights, Quantitative, Verbal
- Data Insights, Verbal, Quantitative
The choice locks once the exam begins. Order affects neither scoring nor difficulty. Its only value is putting your weakest or most draining section where your concentration is best.
Bookmarking and editing
You may bookmark as many questions as you like while working through a section. After answering the final question, a review screen appears listing every question with your bookmarks flagged. From there you can revisit any number of them and change a maximum of three answers per section.
The screen only appears if time remains on the clock. Run the 45 minutes down and you move straight to your break or your next section with no chance to revise anything. Nine editable answers across the full exam sounds generous until you realise every second spent on that screen comes out of the same section timer.
The optional break
The single 10-minute break can be taken after your first section or after your second, and taking it after the first removes the option later. Nothing is banked. Skip it and your next section begins after 60 seconds; use eight of the ten minutes and the remaining two are simply gone. Overrunning it costs you time from your next section, and the rules governing that are covered on the test day experience page.
GMAT Scoring Pattern
Your score report carries four numbers: one for each section, plus a total derived from all three.
| Component |
Range |
Increment |
| Total Score |
205 to 805, every value ending in 5 |
10 points |
| Quantitative Reasoning |
60 to 90 |
1 point |
| Verbal Reasoning |
60 to 90 |
1 point |
| Data Insights |
60 to 90 |
1 point |
All three sections carry identical weight. On the retired edition only Quant and Verbal fed the total, which is why candidates working from older advice routinely treat Data Insights as a minor section. It now decides a third of your score.
Official percentile anchors
From GMAC's score concordance table, published July 2025 and calculated on test-taker data from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2025:
| Total Score | Percentile |
| 805 | 100.0 |
| 705 | 98.0 |
| 685 | 95.8 |
| 655 | 90.5 |
| 645 | 86.7 |
| 605 | 70.3 |
| 565 | 50.9 |
| 505 | 27.1 |
| 445 | 12.7 |
Two numbers deserve attention. A 565 puts you just past the halfway mark of the global pool. And 655 sits at the 90.5th percentile, which is the modern equivalent of the old 700 benchmark that dominated MBA forums for two decades. GMAC refreshes these percentiles annually in the third quarter, so the ranking attached to a given score shifts even when the score scale does not.
Score reporting and validity
Unofficial section scores and your total appear on screen the moment you finish. The Official Score Report follows within 3 to 5 days, occasionally stretching to 20, and includes performance by section, by content domain, by question type and by skill, plus per-question time management data at no extra charge.
Scores remain valid for five years from your test date and stay available for reporting for up to ten years. Results older than ten years cannot be retrieved. You decide which schools receive your report after seeing how you performed.
Marking
A wrong answer carries no additional penalty. An unanswered question earns nothing, so a blind guess on a question you cannot finish beats leaving it blank.
If a first attempt does not go the way you planned, the exam is repeatable within limits, and the attempt gaps and annual caps are set out on the retake policy page.
GMAT Syllabus 2026
GMAC publishes the skills and question types in each section rather than a chapter-wise syllabus, which is the same approach the IIMs take with CAT. There is no official GMAT syllabus PDF to download either; the closest equivalents GMAC publishes are its exam content pages and the GMAT Official Guide. The topic lists below combine GMAC's official section descriptions with the content that appears consistently in official GMAT practice material.
Quantitative Reasoning Syllabus
All 21 questions are Problem Solving. GMAC describes the section as measuring algebraic and arithmetic foundational knowledge and how you apply it, and states plainly that correct answers depend on logic and analytical skill rather than on the underlying mathematics. No calculator.
- Arithmetic and number properties:Integers, factors, multiples, LCM and HCF, prime numbers, divisibility rules, odd and even behaviour, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, powers, roots, exponents, averages, mean, median, mode and range.
- Algebra:Linear equations, simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, inequalities, absolute value, algebraic expressions, factorisation, functions, sequences.
- Word problems:Time, speed and distance, work and rate, simple and compound interest, profit, loss and discount, mixtures and alligation, sets and Venn diagram logic, counting methods, permutations, combinations, probability.
Geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and calculus do not appear. Any source telling you otherwise is describing an exam withdrawn on 1 February 2024.
The no-calculator rule shapes how the section rewards you. Twenty-one questions in 45 minutes gives you 2 minutes 9 seconds each, and the questions are built so that a candidate who simplifies, factors before multiplying, or works backwards from the five answer choices finishes comfortably inside that while a candidate who computes everything longhand does not.
Verbal Reasoning Syllabus
Twenty-three questions split between two types. GMAC does not fix the ratio, so prepare for either to dominate.
Reading Comprehension tests six specified skills: main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure and style. Passages draw on subjects from business to natural science, and no prior subject knowledge is ever required. Questions arrive bundled with their passage, so the reading time is front-loaded before you answer anything.
Critical Reasoning questions sit on a short passage, usually under 100 words. You are asked which of five options strengthens or weakens the argument, why the argument is flawed, or what supports or damages it. The recurring tasks are:
- Strengthen and weaken
- Assumption
- Inference
- Evaluate the argument
- Resolve the paradox or discrepancy
- Identify the reasoning flaw
- Complete the argument
- Boldface and argument-structure questions
Sentence Correction has been removed entirely. No question type on the current GMAT tests grammar rules. Candidates who previously carried a weak Verbal score on Sentence Correction accuracy have nothing to fall back on, and the section now turns almost wholly on argument analysis and precise reading.
Data Insights Syllabus
Twenty questions, 2 minutes 15 seconds each, worth a third of your total score, and the section Indian applicants most often underprepare. GMAC describes it as measuring your ability to analyse and interpret data, apply it to real business situations, and demonstrate data literacy. Questions may demand mathematics, verbal reasoning or both at once. This is the only section with an on-screen calculator.
- Data Sufficiency:A question plus two statements. You judge whether the statements answer the question alone, together, or not at all. You are not asked to produce the value. This type sat in the Quant section on the previous edition.
- Multi-Source Reasoning:Information spread across two or three tabs holding text, tables or graphics, with several questions drawing on the same sources. Some ask you to spot contradictions between sources, some ask for inferences, and some test whether you can identify which data is relevant at all.
- Table Analysis:A sortable table resembling a spreadsheet. You sort by column and judge what meets a stated condition or what the data supports.
- Graphics Interpretation:A scatter plot, x/y graph, bar chart, pie chart or statistical distribution curve, with answers usually chosen from drop-down menus that complete a sentence.
- Two-Part Analysis:One answer selected from each of two columns of a shared option set. The format flexes across quantitative, verbal and mixed content, and commonly tests trade-offs, simultaneous equations and relationships between two quantities.
GMAC does not fix how many questions come from each of the five formats, so the mix varies between test forms.
Two scoring rules make this section unforgiving. Multi-part questions are all-or-nothing: get two of three statements right in a Table Analysis set and the question scores zero. And because Data Insights weighs the same as Quant, a candidate scoring 85 in Quant and 68 in Data Insights loses far more total score than the same imbalance would have cost on the old exam.
Removed from the GMAT Syllabus
Check this list against any book, course outline or syllabus PDF you are already studying from.
| Removed content | Where it sat previously |
| Analytical Writing Assessment, the 30-minute essay | Its own section |
| Sentence Correction | Verbal Reasoning |
| Geometry and coordinate geometry | Quantitative Reasoning |
| Integrated Reasoning as a standalone section | Its own section, absorbed into Data Insights |
| Data Sufficiency | Quantitative Reasoning, moved to Data Insights |
Pacing Inside Each Section
Divide each 45-minute section by its question count and the per-question budget comes out close to two minutes throughout.
| Section | Questions | Average time per question |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | 2 minutes 9 seconds |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 | 1 minute 57 seconds |
| Data Insights | 20 | 2 minutes 15 seconds |
These averages flatter two of the three sections. Reading Comprehension spends its time in the passage before you reach the first attached question, so individual RC questions have to run well below 1 minute 57 seconds to keep the section on schedule. Multi-Source Reasoning front-loads its reading the same way. Data Insights therefore carries the longest nominal average per question and the tightest real one.
GMAT Compared with CAT
Most Indian candidates arrive at the GMAT with CAT preparation behind them and assume the overlap is larger than it is. The CAT column below reports the 2025 cycle, the most recently completed one, as specified by IIM Kozhikode.

A different IIM convenes CAT each year and sets that year's pattern, so CAT's structure is fixed one cycle at a time rather than permanently. CAT 2026 is convened by IIM Indore, with registration open from 3 August 2026 and the exam on 29 November 2026. The Information Bulletin on iimcat.ac.in carries that cycle's confirmed section counts and marking scheme.
Quantitative fundamentals, data interpretation and reading speed transfer well. CAT geometry preparation transfers not at all. And GMAT Critical Reasoning demands a tighter, more literal reading of argument structure than most CAT verbal practice trains.
What This Means for MBA Applications in the UAE
Whether you need the GMAT at all in the UAE depends on the programme, not the country. The American University of Sharjah requires it for its MBA and PhD in Business Administration and sets no minimum score. The MBA at United Arab Emirates University does not list it among the minimum requirements at all, asking instead for a 3.0 GPA, three years of work experience and IELTS 6.0. Several Indian aggregator pages flatten this into "most UAE universities require a GMAT," which is not what the admissions pages say. Programme-by-programme requirements are set out on the page listing UAE universities accepting the GMAT.
What the pattern means for a UAE application is the five-year validity and the year-round test calendar. A score earned while you are still weighing the UAE against Europe or North America stays usable across several UAE admission rounds, and you are never waiting for an annual test window the way CAT candidates are.
Three Things the Pattern Dictates About Study Time
- Practise Quant without a calculator from your first session, because the section forbids one and reaching for it builds the wrong reflex.
- Give Data Insights a third of your study time, matching its weight in the score rather than its reputation as the minor section.
- Settle your section order in mock exams instead of on test day. Study plans, resources and book recommendations are covered on the preparation and recommended books pages.
