GMAT Test Day: What to Expect at the Test Centre and Online
GMAC delivers the GMAT through its own site, mba.com. The account you create there when you register holds the profile your ID must match on test day. Testing runs under two and a half hours including the break, and GMAC asks you to arrive or log in 30 minutes before your appointment time. Two things account for almost every forfeited test date: an ID that does not match your mba.com profile, and a home workspace that fails the room scan. Both are avoidable weeks in advance.

ID Requirements: The Part That Ends Test Dates
Your ID is checked before anything else. Whatever document you present must be current, legible, and carry all four of these:
- Your name in the Roman alphabet, matching your mba.com profile exactly, including the order and placement of your names
- A date of birth matching exactly what you entered when you created your account
- A recent, recognisable photograph
- Your signature
If one document does not carry all four, a test centre requires a second acceptable ID supplying the missing elements.
A passport is always required when you test outside your country of citizenship, and some locations require a passport regardless of citizenship. India is one of them. At an Indian test centre you need a valid international travel passport. Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID and driving licence are not accepted. An expired passport is not accepted, and renewal paperwork does not make an expired one valid.
The same rule governs testing in the UAE. GMAC's outside-citizenship requirement applies there too, and an Emirates ID or UAE residence visa does not substitute for a passport if you are not a UAE citizen. GMAT test centres operate in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Al Ain, and the online exam is available across the country under the same system requirements covered later on this page. Fee forfeited if ID fails: Failing the ID requirements forfeits the exam fee and requires a fresh booking at full price. No exception can be granted at the test centre or on exam day. Where circumstances genuinely make the standard requirements impossible, GMAC reviews exceptions through Customer Care and approval must be granted at least five business days before your appointment. Refugees and candidates granted political asylum should contact GMAC test security at least ten business days before scheduling.
These documents are rejected outright: expired ID of any kind, passport cards, credit cards, employee or student IDs, letters from your college, social security cards, IDs carrying a physical description instead of a photograph, photocopies, and selfies or profile photos.

Names That Do Not Match
The name on your ID and the name on your registration have to be identical, order included. Mismatches happen through surname-first records, initials that expand on one document but not another, and middle names that appear on a passport but were skipped during registration. Compare your mba.com profile against your passport on the day you register, while there is still time to correct it.
What to Bring to a GMAT Test Centre
Very little enters the testing room. Most of what you arrive with goes into a locker, and a short list cannot come into the building at all.

Scratch paper and pens are supplied at the centre. You do not bring your own.
There is no admit card or hall ticket for the GMAT. Several Indian exam portals describe one, complete with instructions to print it and arrive 60 minutes early. Both are inventions. GMAC issues an appointment confirmation email through Pearson VUE, carrying a copy is sensible rather than mandatory, and the arrival guidance is 30 minutes.
The Night Before: Your Test Day Checklist
- Confirm the date, time and location in your confirmation email and your mba.com account. Testing online adds one step: confirm the time zone, because appointments are listed in local time and a misread zone cannot be recovered.
- Check your route and allow for traffic, since GMAC locks all appointment changes within 24 hours of your start time and there is no rescheduling your way out of a delay on the morning.
- Put your passport somewhere you cannot leave without it.
- Then stop studying, because a section score responds to preparation built over weeks, not to anything added the night before.
Check-in at a Test Centre
Four security steps happen before you sit down. You present your ID, you sit for a digital photograph, you provide a digital signature confirming you accept the GMAT Test Taker Rules and Agreement, and where local law permits, you give a palm vein scan.
The palm vein scan surprises first-time candidates. GMAC uses it so each candidate holds a single GMAT record and nobody can sit the exam in another person's place, and it confirms your identity every time you enter the testing room, including on your return from the break.
Refusing any part of check-in means you will not be permitted to test, and the fee is forfeited.
Before the Exam Starts
You get a navigation tutorial covering how the questions, the bookmark tool and the end-of-section review screen work. The Select Section Order prompt then appears immediately before the exam. You pick one of six orders and it locks.
Do not spend that prompt deciding. Settle your order across your practice tests so that on the day it is one click. How the three sections then behave, including the review screen and the three-answer edit limit, is covered on the exam pattern and syllabus page.
The Optional Break
One 10-minute break, taken after your first section or after your second, never both. Take it after the first and the later option disappears.
Wait for the scheduled break message on screen before you get up. Leaving your computer at any other point ends your session, and you will not be allowed to continue. Skip the break and your next section begins in 60 seconds.
Nothing is banked. Use six of your ten minutes and the remaining four are gone. Return late and the overrun is deducted from your next section, and GMAC reserves the right instead to treat the exam as abandoned.
At a centre you stay inside the building, in the areas GMAC designates, which are the locker area, the test centre lobby and the nearest restroom. Testing online, you may leave your desk for the restroom but your camera stays running, and a physical whiteboard stays at your workstation. In both formats you may not touch a phone, notes or any prohibited item, and you may not alter any setting at your workstation.
Because the palm vein scan is repeated when you re-enter the testing room, the ten minutes is not ten minutes of free time. Decide in advance what you will use it for.
Taking the GMAT Online
The online exam carries identical sections, timings, scoring and break rules. What differs is everything around it, and the failure points are technical rather than logistical.
GMAC delivers the online exam in most locations. The exceptions are Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Sudan. Proctoring is currently offered in English only.
System requirements
Install the secure browser and run GMAC's system check days ahead, not on the morning. A setup that fails the requirements on exam day means you cannot test and you forfeit the fee.

Your Room Has to Pass a Scan
During the check-in process, the proctor instructs you to take a 360-degree scan of the room using the webcam.
GMAC insists on an enclosed room where you are alone and cannot be disturbed. This room should have four walls and a door that is behind you or visible to the proctor all through. There should be no clutter on the desk; everything not allowed in the test area that you can access with your hands should be removed from the area. Other computers and monitors should be unplugged and turned off. If there are any glass walls, doors or windows, these should be covered. The computer should be plugged into a power source in the same room, including any extension cords.
The proctor also checks the drawers, your pockets, ceilings, walls and corners, ensures there are no other applications open, and that there is no food or drinks besides water in a clear bottle.
It is the four walls condition that the shared accommodation is unable to provide, and not the internet speed. If you cannot ensure a room with a locked door for 2.5 hours, then it is better to take a test centre.
Whiteboard Rules
Online candidates get a digital whiteboard built into the exam, opened from an icon in the navigation bar, with an effectively endless canvas. You can use a physical whiteboard instead, or both together.
A physical whiteboard must be a single erasable board no larger than 12 by 20 inches (30 by 50 centimetres), unattached to any wall or surface, with up to two dry erase markers and one eraser. No grids, no markings, no background colour.
Three times during the exam you erase it completely and show both sides to the camera: before the exam begins, before the break if you take one, and before the exam ends.
Paper, pens, pencils, permanent markers, tissues, napkins, whiteboard spray, chalkboards, boogie boards and writing tablets are prohibited. On a touchscreen laptop you may not write on the digital whiteboard with a stylus or your finger.

With a passport, a quiet enclosed room, wired internet and a machine that passes the system check, the online exam saves you a commute. If any one of those four is uncertain, the centre is the safer booking.
What Forfeits Your Fee
Each of these ends the appointment and requires a fresh booking at full price:
- Arriving without acceptable ID, or with a name that does not match your registration
- Refusing any part of the check-in process
- A home setup that fails the system requirements or the room scan
- Leaving your computer at any point other than the scheduled break
- Accessing a phone, notes or any prohibited item, including during the break
Arriving too late to complete check-in is treated the same way. GMAC publishes no grace period, which is the practical reason behind the 30-minute guidance: check-in has to be finished before your appointment time, not started at it. A missed appointment is recorded as a no-show, the fee is gone, and you must wait 24 hours from the original start time before booking again. GMAC does consider a free reschedule or refund for documented emergencies such as a medical issue or military obligation, reviewed case by case.
Sessions are also reviewed after the fact. Violations found in a post-exam review can lead to a cancelled score, a ban from future testing and legal action, and any school that already received a cancelled score is informed.
When You Finish
Your unofficial total and section scores appear on screen straight away. The Official Score Report follows within three to five days, occasionally up to twenty, and carries your performance by section, by content domain, by question type and by skill, along with time management data at no extra cost.
If You Want to Cancel the Score
You can cancel at no cost immediately after the exam, and that decision is made on the spot. If you accept the score first, you have 72 hours to cancel online through your mba.com account for a fee. The option can take up to 24 hours to appear depending on your test centre's location, and buying an Additional Score Report inside that window removes your ability to cancel online.
Cancelled scores are not sent to schools and do not appear on future score reports. You can reinstate one later for US$50, up to four years and eleven months from your exam date, with the score available in your account within 48 hours. The reinstated report goes to the schools you selected on test day, and that list cannot be changed.
Set your cancellation threshold before you sit down. A number chosen in advance is a decision. A number chosen in the ninety seconds after an unofficial score appears is a reaction.
